What is Halal?
Halal is an Arabic term meaning “permissible” or “lawful” under Islamic principles and is associated with purity, integrity and responsible practices. In modern manufacturing, Halal goes beyond the finished product.
For meat and poultry, Halal certification also involves specific requirements relating to the animal, slaughter process, slaughter personnel, stunning where applicable, handling and maintenance of Halal integrity throughout processing.
Halal requirements can also apply to pharmaceuticals, nutritional supplements, cosmetics, personal care products, food ingredients, additives and packaging materials. This is why professional Halal certification involves more than simply reviewing an ingredient list. A competent Halal Certification Body evaluates the product and manufacturing system against applicable Halal standards and certification requirements.
For Canadian companies exporting to international Halal markets, requirements may also vary according to the destination country, product category and applicable regulatory framework.
